Lesson 4: From Survival to Overflow

Ashley Evans   -

THE BIG IDEA

Jesus didn’t die just to get you into heaven when you die. He died to give you abundant life RIGHT NOW. A lot of Christians through ignorance live in survival mode – barely making it, scraping by, hoping things don’t fall apart. But that’s not what Jesus promised. He promised OVERFLOW – a life so full of God’s grace that it spills over onto everyone around you. This is meant to be YOUR normal, starting today.

WHAT JESUS PROMISED YOU

John 10:10 records Jesus’ words: “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” (NLT)

Another translation says: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (NIV)

Not survival life. Not barely-getting-by life. Full life. Rich life. Satisfying life. OVERFLOW life.

The Greek word Jesus uses is perissos – it means superabundant, excessive, over and above, more than enough.Picture a cup so full that water is spilling over the sides. That’s what Jesus died to give you.

THE CUP PICTURE

Imagine you place a cup under a running faucet. At first, the cup is empty. Then water starts flowing in. Slowly the cup fills – first quarter full, then half full, then three-quarters full. Then it reaches the brim. It’s completely full.

But the water doesn’t stop flowing. And when the cup can’t hold any more? It OVERFLOWS.

Water spills over the sides. And that overflow becomes supply for everything around the cup.

That’s the picture of the overflow life:

  • You’re the cup – You’re designed to receive from God
  • Grace is the water – God’s love, strength, peace, provision continuously flowing
  • As long as you stay connected – Grace keeps filling you
  • Eventually you overflow – You have more than enough, and it spills out to bless others

You’re not just receiving for yourself. You’re receiving so you can overflow to everyone around you.

SURVIVAL VS. OVERFLOW

SURVIVAL MODE:

  • You have just enough to get through the day
  • You’re constantly worried about running out
  • You’re exhausted by the end of every day
  • You’re anxious about the future
  • You don’t have margin to help others
  • Life feels like a grind

OVERFLOW MODE:

  • You have more than enough for yourself and others
  • You’re confident that God provides
  • You finish the day with energy left
  • You have peace about the future
  • You naturally bless others because you have extra to give
  • Life feels purposeful and joyful

Supply gets you by. Overflow makes you a blessing.

WHAT IS OVERFLOW?

Overflow = Having more than enough of God’s grace in your life so that it naturally spills over to benefit others

This includes overflow in peace (you bring calm to chaos), joy (your joy is contagious), love (you love others freely), strength (you have energy to help), wisdom (you have insight to share), provision (you have resources to give), and hope (you encourage others).

Overflow isn’t about having excess stuff. It’s about having such a deep connection with God that His grace flows through you to touch others.

THE FIVE MARKERS OF OVERFLOW

How do you know if you’re living in overflow? Look for these five markers:

MARKER #1: PEACE DOMINATES, NOT ANXIETY

When you’re living in overflow, you have a deep settled peace even when circumstances are uncertain.

Survival mindset: “What if I run out? What if everything falls apart?”

Overflow mindset: “God’s got this. He’s never failed me. I trust His provision.”

Philippians 4:6-7 says: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.” (NLT)

MARKER #2: GENEROSITY FLOWS, NOT SCARCITY

Survival mindset: “I need to hold tight to what I have. If I give it away, I might not have enough.”

Overflow mindset: “I can give freely because God keeps providing. The more I give, the more flows through me.”

Luke 6:38 says: “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap.” (NLT)

You can’t out-give God. Proverbs 11:24-25 says: “Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything. The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” (NLT)

Second Corinthians 9:6-8 explains: “The one who plants generously will get a generous crop. And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.” (NLT)

“Everything you need and plenty left over to share.” That’s the definition of overflow.

MARKER #3: REST IS NORMAL, NOT RARE

Survival mindset: “I have to keep grinding or everything will fall apart. I can’t afford to rest.”

Overflow mindset: “God sustains what I build. I can rest because He never stops working.” When we talk about rest We are not talking about not working hard. Rest means mental and emotional rest or peace security and a heart that is at rest.

Matthew 11:28-30 says: “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (NLT)

When you’re in overflow, rest is your foundation, not something you earn.

MARKER #4: JOY RETURNS

Survival mindset: “Life is just hard. I’m just trying to make it through.”

Overflow mindset: “Life has challenges, but I’m experiencing God’s goodness every day.”

John 15:11 says: “I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!” (NLT)

When you’re in overflow, joy bubbles up naturally – not fake happiness, but deep contentment and genuine delight.

MARKER #5: IMPACT MULTIPLIES WITHOUT BURNOUT

Survival mindset: “I’m exhausted and barely holding on. I can’t take on anything else.”

Overflow mindset: “I’m impacting people’s lives and still have energy left because God empowers me.”

Second Corinthians 9:8 says: “And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.” (NLT)

When you’re in overflow, your life makes a difference and you’re NOT burned out doing it.

HOW TO LIVE IN OVERFLOW DAILY

MORNING: RECEIVE BEFORE YOU GIVE

Every morning, fill your cup FIRST before you pour anything out. Spend 5-10 minutes with God before you do anything else: Read a few verses from the Bible, talk to God (pray), thank Him for His faithfulness, and receive His love and strength.

“God, fill me up today. I receive Your grace, Your peace, Your strength. I’m starting FROM fullness, not working TOWARD fullness.”

THROUGHOUT THE DAY: STAY CONNECTED

Check in with God regularly. Every few hours, pause and ask: “Am I working from rest or striving from stress? Am I connected to God right now or operating in my own strength?”

If you’ve drifted into survival mode, reconnect immediately: “God, I’m reconnecting right now. I receive Your grace. I’m working from rest, not for rest.”

EVENING: REFLECT AND GIVE THANKS

Before you sleep, review your day: “God, thank You for being with me today. Thank You for sustaining me. I saw Your faithfulness in [specific ways]. I trust You with tomorrow.”

WEEKLY: SABBATH REST

One full day each week (or at minimum, a half day), UNPLUG completely. No work. No grinding. No checking work emails. Instead: Worship God, spend time with family, restore your soul, enjoy life.

This isn’t laziness – this is WISDOM. God designed you to need regular rest. Honor that design.

MONTHLY: EVALUATE AND ELIMINATE

Once a month, ask: “What’s draining me? What’s pulling me back into survival mode? What do I need to cut out or say no to?”

Be ruthless about protecting your overflow. If something consistently drains you without producing good fruit, consider eliminating it.

QUARTERLY: CELEBRATE AND RECALIBRATE

Every three months, look back and celebrate: “Where did I see God’s faithfulness? What victories happened? What am I grateful for?”

Then look forward: “What adjustments do I need to make to stay in overflow? Where do I need to grow?”

Overflow is sustained through daily rhythm, not random occasional effort.

THE CHOICE

You’ll face constant pressure to slip back into survival mode. The world operates from scarcity and fear. Culture says you have to grind 24/7 to succeed. People around you might not understand overflow living. The enemy wants to keep you stressed and exhausted.

So you have to CHOOSE overflow. Daily. Intentionally. Aggressively.

Every morning, declare: “I live from supply, not scarcity. I work from rest, not stress. I receive before I give.”

Every time you feel yourself slipping into survival mode, stop and reconnect: “God, I’m reconnecting to Your grace right now. Overflow is my normal.”

Overflow isn’t a destination you arrive at once. It’s a choice you make every single day.

WHAT OVERFLOW LOOKS LIKE IN REAL LIFE

OVERFLOW IN YOUR FAMILY: Instead of being stressed and short-tempered, you’re patient and present. You have emotional energy left at the end of the day to really connect. Your home feels peaceful because you’re operating from fullness.

OVERFLOW IN YOUR FRIENDSHIPS: Instead of being too busy or too drained to help friends, you naturally think of ways to bless them. You’re the person people call when they need encouragement.

OVERFLOW AT WORK: Instead of grinding through tasks with resentment and exhaustion, you work with excellence and still have energy left. You handle pressure well. You encourage coworkers. You’re productive without being burned out.

OVERFLOW WITH STRANGERS: Instead of being so focused on your own survival that you ignore people around you, you notice needs and naturally help. You leave a generous tip. You hold the door. You smile at people. You share hope when someone seems discouraged.

OVERFLOW IN YOUR FINANCES: Instead of living paycheck-to-paycheck in constant anxiety, you trust God’s provision and give generously. You’re not reckless, but you’re not gripped by fear either. You see opportunities to bless others financially and you do it joyfully.

This is what overflow produces: A life that blesses everyone it touches while YOU remain full, rested, and joyful.

YOUR DAILY OVERFLOW DECLARATION

Starting today, say this every morning:

“I live in overflow. God’s grace flows through me like a river. I have more than enough – enough peace, enough strength, enough love, enough provision, enough wisdom. I’m not just surviving; I’m thriving. I work from rest, not for rest. I give generously because I trust God’s supply. My cup is full and overflowing. I bless everyone I encounter today because I’m living from fullness, not lack. Overflow is my new normal.”

WHAT IF YOU’RE IN A HARD SEASON?

You might be thinking: “How can I live in overflow when everything is hard?”

Here’s the truth: Overflow isn’t about having easy circumstances. It’s about being connected to God’s grace IN THE MIDDLE of hard circumstances.

Even when life is difficult, you can have peace that doesn’t make sense, joy that persists despite the pain, strength to keep going when you should be depleted, hope that the future will be good, and grace to extend to others even when you’re hurting.

Overflow means God’s supply is greater than your demand, no matter what you’re facing.

Second Corinthians 12:9 says: “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” (NLT)

When you’re weak, God’s strength shows up. When you’re empty, God’s supply flows in. That’s overflow – not having no problems, but having MORE than enough grace to handle whatever comes.

THE INVITATION

Jesus is inviting you out of survival mode and into overflow mode.

Stop barely making it. Start thriving.

Stop living from lack. Start living from abundance.

Stop grinding in your own strength. Start flowing in God’s grace.

You were designed for overflow. This is your birthright as a child of God. This is what Jesus died to give you. And the Holy Spirit longs to help you experience the manifestation of this in your daily life.

The supply is unlimited. The grace never runs out. The cup can keep filling.

Stay connected to Jesus. Receive daily. Live from fullness.

Welcome to the overflow life. This is your new normal.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

  1. Of the five markers of overflow (peace, generosity, rest, joy, impact), which one do you struggle with most? What would it look like to experience that marker in your life?
  2. Looking at your current daily routine, are you starting FROM fullness or working TOWARD fullness? What would need to change for you to receive before you give?
  3. Think about the survival vs. overflow comparison. Which mode are you living in right now? What’s one specific choice you could make today to move toward overflow?

THIS WEEK’S CHALLENGE:

For the next seven days, commit to the morning rhythm: Before you do anything else each day, spend 5-10 minutes receiving from God. Read a few verses, pray briefly, thank Him, and declare: “God, fill me up today. I’m starting FROM fullness.”

Set an alarm if you need to. At the end of the week, you will notice the difference in your energy, peace, and ability to bless others. Write down what changed.
