Day Four

Jane Evans   -

 Joshua 1:2a

“Moses My servant is dead….”

I’m labouring this point again today because, well, God did! Twice in two verses we are told that Moses is dead, the second time, God is announcing the news to Joshua, which is strange when you consider what Deuteronomy chapter 34 says,

The people of Israel mourned for Moses on the plains of Moab for thirty days, until the customary period of mourning was over.”

The question begs to be asked, why did Joshua after 30 days of mourning Moses’ death, need to be told that he was dead?

Perhaps he was in denial, or ‘stuck’ hoping Moses would reappear? Perhaps he was still grieving and holding on to the memories of what used to be. Perhaps the truth is, that it’s harder to let go of the security of the past than we’d all like to admit!

I think God understands this and I think it’s why God buried Moses and didn’t tell anyone where the site was!

Deuteronomy 34:5-6

So Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, just as the Lord had said. The Lord buried him in a valley near Beth-peor in Moab, but to this day no one knows the exact place.

I think God knew that they were so attached to the security he offered that couldn’t bear to leave him behind and would have tried to carry him into the future. It’s hard to take bold action carrying the corpse of your past with you. It’s hard to be courageous when you are still attached to the way things used to be.

Lets pause again for a moment today and ask God to show us what can’t go with us into the conquests of tomorrow. What relationships, what thinking, what habits, what priorities need to change, to be pronounced dead, so that we can build a smooth runway to possess what He has waiting for us.

Blessings,
